In Dusseldorf once I bought a German-made eye-mask that was the last word in eye-mask technology. It was darned expensive, but after having used it for years I wish I hadn't bought three or four more.

This one, the Bucky "40 Blinks Mask" is probably the best I've seen for sale domestically. There are no plastic buckles in the back: it fastens to itself using velcro. The straps are proper thick straps, not strings. There is a puffy hollow in front of your eyes, so your eyelashes don't feel crushed: the face mask material is made out of washable foam, not leather or satin.

The best thing about this eyemask is that is hugs your down quite a ways down your nose. This can take some getting used to since it can create a pinching effect, but the big advantage is that very little light will be able to get in through the nose opening, a common problem with masks that merely lie flat on your face.

The Mindfold allows me to meditate in complete darkness anywhere and at anytime. When I open my eyes my eyelashes don't hit the insides of the mask and this is much more comfortable than any other eye cover I've owned. I was able to sleep at Burning Man at Mid-day with this mask. Normally, I have a hard time sleeping; noises and lights in the night disturb me. This eye mask makes the difference. This is the second one I've bought (I accidentally washed the first one). We have not had a need to use this item, but we feel they will be useful when that day comes. We are not particularly impressed with the quality of materials on the outside, but this is a utilitarian item and so it is what is on the inside that counts. Sinus headaches are terrible and we have had similar packs in the past, but they didn't have the band to hold them in place which made them more difficult to use. We are hoping that this style will allow us to sleep while it is in use.

In my first use I found the "foam" material around the eye wells so toxic it made my eyes swell and redden after wearing it less than an hour. Also, the mask is too stiff to move with the face during sleep, leaking light and even leaving indentations on the upper cheeks. And lastly, the material is very thick and impermeable, allowing for no air circulation at all. It made the area sweaty and uncomfortable. $25.00 for this product is unconscionable. Definitely not a keeper.

I'm really sensitive to light when going to sleep, so I've become quite used to wearing blindfolds. These are built out of a nice fabric and will probably last a while. If you have a larger nose, this might still allow some light in around the nose, but it's better than others I've worn. Lastly, because of the contours or bumps around the eyes if you sleep on your side, it might be a little uncomfortable since the bump may fall on the side of your face a little. Overall, it does what it's supposed to.

I have a bad habit of moving my head UP and DOWN when I sleep, and that thingy kind of scratch my ear a little bit. It would be much better if they use different material for that. If you use this on airplane, then it won't be your concern. About the light leaks in to from the nose, It really depends on your nose shape. I have a wide and short nose, so the light does leak inside JUST a little bit. However, it doesn't effect me that much because if you close your eyes with the mask on, even the light leaked inside, you wouldn't even notice. If your nose is longer than my Asian nose, you probably won't run into this problem. About the ear plug, it works well. They are desire to block from small middle noise. Small noise can be like people walk by if you sleep on the couch or someone cooking while you're on the living room. Middle noise could be some one slam the front door, or a glass of water falls down and break. Large noise may be construction noise or someone screaming. It's not extremely comfortable to wear. It will take some times to get used to it. And It allows you to roll over or side sleeping. The Pouch is nice looking, you can use it for a small camera or carry changes around. Overall, I would highly recommend this product, especially if you want to have a good sleep on the air plane.

Customer Review: good mask for a long flight
I bought 2 different masks and this was the better of the two. I bought this for a 18+ hour flight but I use a sleep mask every night because any light bothers me. This mask really keeps out the light. The foam is more comfortable than the poly stuffing some masks use. The only problem was that I found the nose part a little uncomfortable pinching my nose a little and my face has small features. Overall a good sleep mask.

To compare, I bought sleep masks from three different manufacturers: Dream Essentials Escape, Bucky, and Lewis N. Clark. I would like to announce the grand prize winner of the Sleep Mask Contest: Dream Essentials Escape. HANDS DOWN.
All three masks keep the light out well. The Dream Essentials Escape eye insets, however, are the feature that make this mask so much better. There is absolutely nothing pressing on your eyes with this mask.
The other two masks have a different design, and they are the same as each other. In both the Bucky and the Lewis N. Clark masks, there is a fold of fabric at the bottom that is supposed to keep the mask off of your eyes, but it really doesn't work that well. Bucky is expensive for the same design as the Lewis N. Clark which, as I recall, was about 1/3 - 1/2 the price of the Bucky. Bucky has a great reputation, but I wasn't that impressed.
If you aren't so fussy, then the other masks are, in my opinion, just o.k. However, if you want a really great mask, then THIS is it.

*Quality: The material and stitching is well done and should last for a long time. The elastic is good quality and hasn't lost shape.

*Fit: The elastic is wide and stretches for flexibility in fit but isn't too stretchy so it stays put. One one side the elastic goes through a loop so it can be easily adjusted.

The mask is quite large. The eye piece measures 4" tall. As a side note, the mask side-to-side measures 10" which fits my face nicely. The mask is about 1/2 inch thick.

The material at the bottom of the mask designed to block light is soft and designed very well - it doesn't flip-flop as this feature does on so many other masks. Rather it keeps shape and blocks light from coming in at the bottom of the mask.

*Details: It is light weight and the cotton covering is very soft. The mask is stiff and keeps it's shape. The contoured eye pockets are a bit too soft and I would like the outer fabric to be a bit stiffer in the eye area to accommodate eye lashes. However, my eyes don't feel pressure and it has performed very well so far (1 month).

Bought this for my wife and so I asked her how she liked it. She likes it better than the one she had from LLBean; says it blocks more light and is more comfortable but it does make her face sweat around the eyes.

From my perspective, I know it gives her a better nights sleep as she is very sensitive to light. She doesn't wake up as much and that's good for both of us.

I received these masks as a Christmas gift. I find that I sleep much better when it's dark and I thought I'd give this brand of mask a try.

The scent disappeared within a couple of days, and I didn't find it unpleasant because I like lavender. The mask is very comfortable and adjustable. A little light does come through the bottom, but I find by simply moving it down a bit on my nose the light is blocked out. It also seems to help my sinuses when I do that. In any case, when there's too much light in the room, this mask does the trick for me and I'm very pleased to have two masks in case one gets lost or dirty.

Over the years I have owned and used quite a number of sleep masks. This is by far one of the better ones I have owned and used. I am one of those unfortunate people that simply cannot sleep if there is even a small spot of light in the room. I also do a lot of traveling, staying in strange rooms, on planes, and the like. As you know, most hotel rooms are not the darkest places in the world and we won't event get into planes.

This mask is comfortable, fits well and there is no "light leakage." I rather enjoy the scent used in this one as it does indeed aide in sleep. The fabric is soft but not itchy nose soft. I am also into power naps during the day and all I have to do is slip on a nice CD of quite music or nature sounds, put this mask on, and I am gone.

I like the Velcro strap as opposed to elastic. When you buy one of these, do note that they come in various sizes so choose the correct one for you.
This is a good product and the price is certainly right.

Customer Review: Inferior Design, Worst Sleep Mask Ever Purchased

I've used sleep masks for many years, some good, some not so good, but this one is, without hesitation, the most poorly designed sleep mask I've ever had the misfortune to own.
The problems I've faced are:

1) The rough side of the velcro that holds the mask closed faces your pillow, so if you do not have every last part of the velcro covered it will stick to your pillowcase if you lay on your back. When you go to move it "rips" off the pillowcase it has become stuck to. This noise will probably wake you up; if it doesn't the fact that the mask, which has become stuck to your pillowcase, twists on your head as you roll over and no longer keeps the light out as the nose cutout now resides on your temple will wake you up. I would imagine that only those people with small heads can have the velcro completely covered, if your head is normal or on the larger size, you'll have a significant amount of velcro showing and not only be awakened, but ruin your pillowcase, as this sleep mask has done mine.

2) Because of its design, in order to keep the mask on the entire night as you sleep, you have to velcro it pretty tight to your head. I've had several masks that are like that and usually it's no big deal, but because of the poor design of this sleep mask, if I make it tight enough to not fall off or spin around my head it pushes against my eyes fairly hard and when I awake my vision is blurry for usually more than 30 minutes and my eyes hurt because of the pressure against them all night long.

3) The assertion that the mask muffles noise is simply ridiculous. Unless you strap the mask so tight to your head that your eyeballs are being shoved backwards into your brain, you will notice absolutely no sound reduction. Even when you have the mask as tight as it will go, it still does not reduce noise in the least. This is a false assertion and was one of the main reasons I purchased this sleep mask, only to be very disappointed.

4) Finally, the ridiculous assertion that this mask helps us "ladies" keep a lovely hairstyle as we sleep, is laughable. The direct quote from their website is this,

"And, for you ladies, we've all heard the saying 'Nothing looks better on a woman than a good night's sleep.' Sleep Master actually keeps your hairstyle in place during sleep! Wake up, take off Sleep Master, and you are ready to go...No bedhead!"

Sleep Master's assertion only holds true if flat on top, with a band of squished hair across the middle of your head, then flat at the bottom is a hairstyle which you covet. This sleep mask hardly helps you maintain your out-of-the-stylist's-chair hair style while you doze, like it asserts.
Please give a great deal of thought before wasting your money on this sleep mask. My suggestion would be to stay with a more tried-and-true model, for this one is a complete fallacy from start to finish.
